It’s time for Wings Over Republic’s 9th Annual Fly-In, so get ready for lots of fun this coming Saturday and Sunday, August 23-24 at Republic’s Merritt Field Airport.
Early arriving pilots will get together on Friday for a private lunch and dinner, but Saturday and Sunday the public is encouraged to join in on all the fun activities and great meals. Parking and admission are free all day Saturday and Sunday. If you must bring your pet, be sure it is on a leash.
A $5 pancake breakfast from 7-10 a.m. starts off Saturday and from noon-2 p.m. lunch will be avilable for $6. Free motor tours will be given to the towns of Republic and Curlew with lots of interesting tourist stops along the way. Free Curlew Lake excursions are also offered and other booths and activities will add to the fun.
Scale model radio-controlled airplanes will be on site. Raffle tickets will be sold for the both the annual fly-in quilt and a special framed cross-stitch of the fly-in, designed and donated by Lana Jackson of Moses Lake.
Saturday evening will offer a $10 cook-your-own-steak-dinner from 5-7 p.m. Live music, sky jumpers (weather permitting) and entertainment will add to Saturday night festivities. It appears to be more than a rumor that Elvis (Bernie Odegard) will make an appearance again and he, the LC Band and singers Patti Baldwin and Jerry Asbach will entertain the crowd right after dinner. Pilots will then camp under their wings or enjoy a free shuttle to local motels and resorts of their choice.
Sunday starts off again with a $5 pancake breakfast open to the public from 7-10 a.m. just before the airplanes all head back to their home bases. Pancake chef Joel Sweetland will no doubt bring a new design for his annual surprise pancake.
Door prizes will be awarded all weekend.
