Two Omak women were arrested Nov. 7 after allegedly trying to pass a forged check in Spokane that led to the discovery of an apparent spending spree, according to the Omak Police Department.
The women, ages 28 and 21, were arrested after they were caught on a security camera at a store in Spokane.
Omak officer Rusty Tallant reviewed surveillance tape from the store to identify the women, said Omak Police chief Larry Schreckengast.
The pair allegedly concocted a scheme that involved forging checks found in a purse stolen by the older woman from an Omak dance studio.
She allegedly entered the building where her grade school-aged daughter attends dance lessons along with the 17-year-old victim, whose purse also contained an iPod, cell phone and identification, according to Schreckengast.
The chief said the arrests culminated cooperative efforts of an Omak bank, the victim and her mother, Spokane Police and a Spokane clothing store.
The police chief praised the efforts of Tallant.
Other charges are pending against the women in Spokane, Schreckengast said.
He noted that an Omak convenience store would not cash one of the stolen checks for cigarettes when one of the suspects presented the 17-year-old victim's identification.
