Keith Jim and his mother, Verna Saulque, filed a complaint for damages Dec. 2 in Okanogan County Superior Court against Grand Coulee Dam School District No. 301, Lake Roosevelt High School teacher Lee Largent, and students Luke Seekins, Dontae Smith and Edward Hall.
Jim was a student in the shop class taught by Largent Dec. 2, 2005, according to the complaint. Jim went outside to let a welding project cool off when defendants Seekins, Smith and Hall allegedly were preparing to fire a makeshift snowball cannon.
Firing of the cannon near Jim caused a concussion, permanent hearing loss, memory loss and other injuries, according to the filing.
The students constructed the cannon in shop class and had fired it during the class or school hours several times using shop materials to ignite the cannon, the complaint alleges.
The complaint seeks general and special damages and costs.
