PATEROS - A 17-year-old student from Pateros High School died suddenly March 18 from a mystery illness, according to Pateros School District Superintendent Lois Davies.
The cause of death is not known, but Davies said Zachery Swezey was suffering from flu-like symptoms on March 16. He went home and was feeling well enough the next day to attend baseball practice, Davies said.
His illness returned shortly after practice, Davies said.
Swezey was at home with his family at the time of his death.
"It came as a total surprise for the family," Davies said. "They didn't expect it at all."
The school will have grief counselors in the library all day today, March 19.
"Zachery was known by all the students in our school and many people in the community," Davies said. "We are all saddened by his untimely death."
A letter will be going home to parents today with the information.
"Zach's family wants all Pateros students to know that he would want you to continue doing what you're doing," Davies said. "Go to baseball and other sports practices, go to school, play music, sing. He would want you to live your life fully."
A memorial service is being planned. Barnes Chapel, Brewster, is handling the arrangements.
