REPUBLIC - A workshop on "Growing Your Own Groceries" will be held in three locations in Ferry and Okanogan counties.
Sessions run from 6-8:30 p.m., and are planned for Wednesday, April 8, at the Nespelem Longhouse; Monday, April 20, at the Malo Grange in Ferry County, and Wednesday, April 22, at the Omak Community Center.
"With budgets tightening and a growing emphasis on growing food locally, more people are wanting to use gardening to help put food on their tables -including the White House," a Washington State University Extension for Ferry County announcement said.
People attending the workshop will learn how to extend Ferry County's growing season for hard-to-ripen crops like tomatoes and how to take advantage of the cold weather to produce cool season salads, the announcement said.
Carol Mack, Pend Oreille County Extension agriculture and master gardener coordinator, and Dan Fagerlie, Ferry County Extension director, will share tips and practices.
Advance registration for the Malo program is required by calling WSU Ferry County Extension at 775-5235 by 4 p.m. April 17.
