WINTHROP – U.S. Forest Service crews are on the lookout for new fire starts following lighting storms earlier this week.
Firefighters worked to contain the Mills Flat Fire northwest of Methow on June 16.
The fire burned about 19 acres on Forest Service and private land. Entiat Hot Shot firefighters are continuing work today, June 17, to mop up 50 feet in from the fire line.
“Fires ignited by lightning can smolder and creep around for several days before putting up visible smoke,” Public Affairs Specialist Shannon O’Brien said. “To find the fires as early as possible, we rely on aerial reconnaissance, patrols and reports from concerned citizens.”
Fires can be reported by calling 911 or 800-826-3383.
