OKANOGAN - A Douglas County Sheriff's Office robotic camera found a 39-year-old Okanogan man died earlier this morning from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The camera was deployed around 11 a.m. after several attempts with tear gas failed to get Nick Ray to come out of a back garage at his home on Orchard Grade, Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Roger said.
It took the operator some time to maneuver in the building around mattresses, Rogers said. The body was located shortly before 11:30 a.m.
Ray allegedly made the threats to kill his wife and then himself around 4 a.m. at a residence on Orchard Grade, Rogers said. The family, including two younger children and an older boy, escaped out a window, he said.
Ray fled to the nearby garage.
Rogers said Ray apparently died from a single gunshot heard between 7 and 7:10 a.m.
He'd not responded to calls from deputies prior to that for him to come out. A deputy approached shortly before 7 a.m. and saw a flashlight beam back at him, Rogers said, who said a short time after that there was a single gun shot.
Orchard Grade, which had been closed since the standoff started around 5 a.m., was opened at 11:30 a.m.
