SEATTLE - Two state agencies have each agreed to pay half of a $1.5 million settlement to a girl, now 14, who was abused at the hands of relatives.
The Department of Corrections failed to supervise the girl's grandfather, a twice-convicted child molester, while the girl was living with him and her grandmother in Okanogan County. The state Department of Social and Health Services left the girl in the home despite warnings that it was unsafe, news reports said.
The case was settled in July and received a judge's signature Nov. 13, DSHS spokesman Steve Williams said.
"DSHS regrets the trauma the young girl suffered at the hands of relatives," a DSHS statement said. "We hope the settlement assists her as she completes her education and moves on to a full and productive life."
Williams said all parties agreed that a quick settlement was best for the child and family to spare them from reliving the pain of the situation.
The claim says the girl was sexually abused by her grandfather and physically abused by her grandmother several times over several years.
She began living with her grandmother in Okanogan County at 2 months old. Her grandfather was released from prison in 1999, news reports said.
The girl was removed from the home in 2004 and now lives with her mother in Pierce County.
