WATERVILLE - Douglas County Sheriff's deputies have arrested two local men in connection with a shooting spree that occurred early Tuesday morning at various places in town.
Trever Edward Larkin, 21, and Ryan Kevin Hallowell, 23, were both apprehended by deputies conducting a search for two men allegedly driving through town firing guns out the window of their car shortly after 3 a.m.
Larkin, a passenger in the vehicle, faces possible charges of drive-by shooting, reckless endangerment, obstructing a law enforcement officer, carrying a loaded pistol in a vehicle, third-degree escape and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Hallowell, the driver, is facing charges of drive-by shooting, reckless endangerment, obstructing a law enforcement officer, carrying a loaded pistol in a vehicle and felon in possession of a firearm.
According to a police report, deputies received a report of two men driving around the city shooting from their vehicle.
Initially, responding deputies could not find the vehicle, but did recover several spent 9 mm shell casings, the report said. As deputies were investigating the initial call, they received a second call of shooters firing from a small hatchback.
Deputies stumbled onto the car and the two men in the 500 block of North Central Avenue after spotting brake lights in a driveway, the report said.
Deputies called for backup believing the men armed and dangerous, the report said.
Neither Larkin nor Hallowell would respond to deputies who ordered them from the car, the report said. Larkin eventually complied, but Hallowell had to be removed by deputies. Both were immediately handcuffed.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, deputies located several more 9 mm shell casings, two loaded magazines and a Ruger pistol, the report said.
After the discovery, deputies arrested the suspects and put them in the back of a patrol car - Larkin attempted to escape, getting the door open only to be subdued by deputies.
Nobody was injured in the shootings.
However, a resident at 400 W. Second St. reported finding a bullet hole in the wall of her house.
"The actions of the suspects during the crime and behaviors they displayed toward the deputies made this an extremely dangerous situation," Sheriff Harvey Gjsedal said. "I commend the deputies for their professional work."
