BRIDGEPORT - Douglas County officials are asking people who use Pearl Hill Road to write letters detailing how damage to the bridge, and the detours required because of it, have impacted commerce and recreation.
The bridge and ways to fix the problem it presents were the topics at a public meeting with Commissioners Mary Hunt and Dale Snyder Feb. 4.
The bridge was upgraded about five years ago, said Douglas County Engineer Doug Bramlett, and the upgraded sections are in good condition.
But sometime after the upgrades, an overweight load crossed the bridge and damaged the original structure, which dates to 1958, Bramlett said.
As a result, only one car at a time is allowed on the bridge, and bigger vehicles - like trucks filled with wheat and apples - are prohibited.
The bridge can't be rebuilt since it's unique because of its construction materials and is a state historic landmark, Bramlett said.
Letters would help county officials make their case for federal funding for a detour bridge, Bramlett said. They can be sent to the commissioners' office or to Bramlett at the Douglas County Courthouse in Waterville.
