     YAKIMA - Lorrie Mattson scored 21 points for the Pateros girls basketball team as it swept away Cusick 32-22 in the opening round Feb. 24 of the Class 1B state tournament.
     On the state boys side in the SunDome, Sunnyside Christian proved to be too much for Pateros, winning 46-37.
     The Pateros girls will remain in the nighttime half of the bracket, playing at 9 p.m. tonight, against North Sound Christian, a 43-27 winner over Wishkah Valley in the opening round.
     The boys drop to the loser-out consolation bracket against Neah Bay at 2 p.m. Thursday.
     The girls (17-6) built a 16-6 halftime lead over Cusick powered by Mattson, who made 10-of-20 shots.
     Mattson finished with eight rebounds for the Nannies, who won the battle of the boards 39-37.
     Chancy Gill added six rebounds.
     Pateros scored 20 points off 27 Cusick turnovers.
     The Pateros boys rallied from being down 20-9 to nearly pulled an upset of No. 3 ranked Sunnyside Christian.
     The Knight’s 6-6 Steven Broersma scored 21 of his 24 points in the first three quarters. Once he was put in check, Pateros crept back into the game to lead 37-36 after Nate Taylor hit a 10-footer with 2:34 left.
     But then SC's Steven Bosma, who had but one free throw in the first three quarters, scored on two fast break baskets and four free throws. He also produced two steals to power the Knights on a 10-0 run in the final 1:45 of the game.
     Sunnyside Christian (20-3) was to play at 9 p.m. in the state quarterfinals against Almira/Coulee-Hartline (17-8), which upset fifth-ranked Neah Bay 69-40 on Wednesday.
     In the 2B District Tournament at Wenatchee High School, the Liberty Bell girls will play Entiat at 8:30 p.m. tonight for the district championship and the No. 1 seed to state.
     Liberty Bell reached the title game by stopping Oroville 47-29 on Feb. 22.
     Entiat won its opener 62-35 over Kittitas.
     The Oroville girls play at 4:30 p.m. tonight against Kittitas in a loser out game.
     The winner advances to play at 7:30 p.m. Saturday the loser of the girls championship game. The winner advances to state as a No. 2 seeded team.
     On the boys side, Oroville dropped their opening round game 48-43 to Manson.
     Oroville takes on Soap Lake, which fell 50-40 in its opener, at 4 p.m. in a loser-out game.
     The winner advances to play at 6 p.m. Saturday the loser of the championship game between Manson and Entiat, which will be at 7 p.m. tonight.
     The winner of the championship game is seeded No. 1 to state Feb. 3-6 at the Spokane Arena.
     The winner of the consolation game Saturday will be seeded No. 2 to state.
     The class 1A regional tournament starts on Friday, Feb. 26, at Moses Lake High School.
     In boys play at 8 p.m., Lakeside (10-13) takes on Lake Roosevelt (15-7) in the Chief Gym with the winner be seeded No. 3 to state.
     At the same time in the Maroon Gym, Chewelah (14-9) takes on Cashmere (14-8). The loser is out.
     The winner takes on the loser of the Lakeside/Lake Roosevelt game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 in Chief Gym, with the winner being a No. 4 seed to state.
     The regional championship, where the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds to state are on the line along with the title, will pit Freeman (18-4) against Chelan (20-1) at 7:30 p.m. in Chief Gym.
     In girls play at 6 p.m. Friday, Lakeside (19-3) takes on Chelan (19-3) at 6 p.m. in Chief Gym, with the winner being seeded No. 3 to state.
     At the same time in Maroon Gym, Kettle Falls (12-11) takes on Brewster (12-11) in a loser-out game.
     The winner takes on the loser of the Lakeside/Chelan game at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 in Chief Gym. The winner is No. 4 to state.
     The regional championship game, where the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds will be decided, pits Freeman (21-1) against Okanogan (21-1) at 6 p.m. in Chief Gym.
