BRIDGEPORT BAR - An illegal burn on Bridgeport Bar got away from its handlers and firefighters spent about 90 minutes extinguishing it Sunday evening, Feb. 28.
The fire was reported on Richards Avenue at about 8:35 p.m., Brewster Fire Chief Mike Webster said.
It was a “large pile of material,” said Steve Anderson, one of the firefighters on the scene, and most of it was material that people aren’t supposed to burn anymore, from mattresses to treated wood.
It set fire to the surrounding dry grass, and “when we got there they were squirting a little hose on it,” Anderson said.
Firefighters extinguished the grass fire and tore apart the burn pile to extinguish any smoldering remains, he said.
Two trucks from the Rocky Butte fire station and two from Brewster responded.
