BRIDGEPORT - After months of discussion and review, the city council and Douglas County Commissioners have approved an agreement for the city to provide some dog control services on Bridgeport Bar.
The agreement will take effect in early April. Bridgeport animal control officer Bill Zweigle will patrol Bridgeport Bar for 15 hours per month, Bridgeport Mayor Steve Jenkins said.
Any dogs Zweigle picks up will be housed in the city pound. The county will help pay for its expansion and also care and disposal fees for animals picked up on the bar, Jenkins said.
Dog licenses are not required for Bridgeport Bar residents, but Jenkins said city officials are encouraging residents to get identification tags for their dogs, so Zweigle can return them.
In other business Feb. 24, the council:
-Decided not to raise animal control fees. The council wants people to reclaim their dogs, and city officials plan to start an adoption program for unclaimed dogs, Jenkins said.
-Heard from council members Janet Conklin and Phil Lee about their efforts to start a committee to look at derelict properties and make recommendations for cleanup.
ìWhat weíre looking for is scale,î Jenkins said.
The committee will look at properties that need cleaning up and rank them in order of priority, then turn the list over to city officials. The committee can make recommendations, but any action is up to the city, Jenkins said.
City officials want to encourage voluntary compliance but will take people to court if necessary, he said.
