OMAK - Author Lois Lowry will visit Omak and Republic as part of the North Central Regional Library System's 50th anniversary.
She will appear at 7 p.m. Monday, April 5, at the Omak Performing Arts Center and 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, at Republic High School. Both are open to everyone; admission is free.
Lowry is author of "The Giver," a Newbery Medal-winning novel for young people.
"Readers are encouraged to check out a copy of her book, 'The Giver,' from the local library and read and discuss it with family members, then participate in a public appearance of the author," Omak Librarian Sharon Reddick said.
The book describes a utopian society achieved at the cost of all possibility of choice by its members.
Reactions to its message vary as readers focus on either the means of achieving such a society or the underlying activities that are unacceptable, Reddick said. An unresolved ending leaves the reader to make a personal decision.
Lowry has written more than 30 books for young adults.
