PATEROS - A 17-year-old Brewster boy was arrested March 18 in connection with a burglary last week at Yancey's Ace Hardware.
The boy was booked into the Okanogan County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of second-degree burglary and first-degree theft, Sheriff Frank Rogers said.
The break-in was reported the morning of March 10. A cinder block was hurled through a glass door at the rear of the building.
About $3,000 worth of alcohol, knives, radios, spray paint, pepper spray, a BB gun, ammunition and other items were taken.
"After the burglary we were able to find where the suspects had used the stolen spray paint to spray graffiti on a large bin stack and railroad cars located on Chelan Fruit property north of Pateros," Rogers said. "At the scene of graffiti several empty packages of the stolen items were located."
Graffiti also was found on the Brewster water tank.
Red spray paint used was from the store, Rogers said. Several .22-caliber rounds were fired at lights and a paint can.
On March 12 the Brewster Police Department arrested a juvenile on suspicion of spray painting graffiti using paint from the store.
Sgt. Gene Davis and members of the Brewster Police Department continued to work on various leads and on March 15 obtained additional information and evidence, Rogers said.
Davis contacted the boy March 18. The boy was interviewed at the Brewster Police Department.
A second suspect is being sought.
Several stolen items apparently ended up in the Columbia River, Rogers said.
"We will be checking out areas where the items may have been dumped," he said.
