BREWSTER – Burglars (possibly the same burglars as the previous night) broke into two businesses but came away almost empty-handed Thursday night, April 15.
Thieves broke the front door at Lindsey’s Drive In, 544 W. Main St., and into Brewster Marketplace on Highway 97 sometime after 9 p.m., Brewster Police Lieutenant Kelly Hook said. A passerby discovered the broken door at Lindsey’s at about 5 a.m.
When employees arrived there was “glass everywhere” and the cash register was “catawampus” on the counter with the drawer open, Leta Shrable said. The thieves stole about $12 in Canadian money that was kept in the cash register, but didn’t do any damage or steal any food, Shrable said.
At Brewster Marketplace, the thieves turned off the electricity to Mercado Mexicano, next door to the grocery store, apparently to evade the security system, Hook said. They ended up in the grocery store instead, where the security system was still activated.
They kept burglarizing anyway, attempting but failing to open a cash register in the bakery/deli section. They walked out with a laptop computer, but nothing was damaged.
Hook said the thieves left physical evidence behind and the police have identified some persons of interest.
Anyone with information about the case can call the Brewster Police Department, 509-689-2331.
