PATEROS – With two young children in his vehicle, a Chelan man took an Okanogan County Sheriff's deputy on a pursuit around 10:35 p.m. Tuesday night, officials said.
Douglas L. Atchison, 31, fled from his vehicle on foot after attempting to elude the deputy on southbound Highway 97 through town and eventually giving himself up while hiding under a vehicle, Undersheriff Joe Somday said.
It wasn’t until then, however, that he mentioned the children – a 6-year-old and a 4-year-old – were in the vehicle, officials said. They were later taken into custody by Child Protective Services.
Initially clocked at 75 mph in a 60 while traveling on Highway 97, Atchison ignored the lights behind him as well as the eventual siren, officials said.
He was booked into the Okanogan County Corrections Center on charges of attempting to elude, second-degree driving with a revoked license, driving a vehicle without an ignition interlock, resisting arrest, suspicion of reckless endangerment, drug paraphernalia, speeding, no proof of insurance and expired tabs.
