Obituary: Patrick John Hartney
Pat Hartney, 88, went home to be with the Lord Jan. 10, 2010, at his home in Ellensburg, Wash. He was born May 10, 1921, in Manhattan Borough, New York City, to John and Mary (Malek) Hartney. He was raised in Glen Cove, Long Island, by his grandfather, Michael Hartwig, after the death of his mother when he was a young boy.
Although Pat's foot sustained a permanent injury when he was less than a year old, he was drafted for home service with the Army in 1942 and sent to Ft. Lewis. In the fall of 1944, he came to Malott accompanying a group of German prisoners of war, who were harvesting apples in the Okanogan Valley. While stationed there, he met and married Edna Moss Monro on April 3, 1945. He was discharged from the Army in February 1946.
They made their home on Barnholt Loop Road, three miles south of Okanogan, for 57 years. The property had been purchased by Edna's grandparents, Allie and Martha Moss, in 1909, and sold to the Hartneys by Edgar and Amy Moss in 1947. They moved to Ellensburg in 2002 when Edna needed care from her sister, Muriel Douglass.
Pat was employed at Biles-Coleman Lumber Company in Omak for 30 years. He was an avid baseball fan all his life and particularly partial to the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was associated with the Christians gathered in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ at the Okanogan Gospel Hall until his move to Ellensburg, where he attended Calvary Baptist Church.
Pat was preceded in death by his wife in 2005. He is survived by two sons, Vince Hartney of Okanogan and Mike Hartney of Kittitas; a step-son, Tom (Carol) Monroe of Roslyn; four grandsons, Jeff (Michele) Hartney of Gulfport, Miss., Andrew (Samie) Hartney of Twin Falls, Idaho, Jason (Sierra) Hartney of Corvalis, Ore., and Victor Hartney of Port Angeles, Wash.; three granddaughters, Kyra (Gary) Biondolillo of Port Angeles, Wash., Eleanor (Clint) Miller of Death Valley, Calif., and Mistina Hartney of Okanogan; three step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Jerry Hartney of Long Island, N.Y.; and a sister-in-law, Muriel Douglass of Ellensburg.
Burial was in the Omak Memorial Cemetery, Jan. 13, 2010. Affordable Funeral Care of Ellensburg was in charge of arrangements.
