Obituary:Wanda May Smith
Wanda May Smith was born May 5, 1918, in Conconully Wash., and she passed away on Nov. 9, 2012, at Mid-Valley Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born to Homer and Della (Woodward) Bolin. Her early years were spent on Silver Hill at their family ranch, surrounded by many cousins and family. She rode horseback five miles each day to attend school in Conconully and later attended school at Riverside, Wash. She married Omar E. Smith on Oct. 18, 1935, and was blessed with two daughters.
During her marriage to Omar, they bought the Smith Family Ranch on Pine Creek and ran a cattle/sheep business, continuing a family legacy. Wanda was known for her wonderful ranch cooking skills, and no one ever left her home without feeling loved and nourished, including countless haying crews.
She loved to hunt and fish, bagging a nice bull elk and hundreds of grouse. She took pride in a large garden, canning everything in sight.
Wanda spent many years sorting fruit at local packing sheds.
Wanda was the beloved matriarch of five generations, providing constant financial, political, and educational advice. She placed a high value on education, financially helping all grandchildren obtain their educational goals by establishing a savings account for each.
Wanda was an avid fan of the Gonzaga basketball team and was a true blue conservative. Wanda crocheted an afghan for each family member and made many lovely quilts. She was known for her lively spirit, hard work, opinions, and exceptional love of family.
Omar preceded her in death in 2003; and she is survived by her brother, Ted Bolin; daughters, Myrna Hughes and Janice (Paul) Seale; grandchildren, Rita Jensen, Scott Hughes, Grant Hughes, Leslie Hogan, Stacey Jagla, Jason Jessup, Cole Jessup and Matt Jessup; 18 great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren.
Wanda’s family would like to thank the caring staff at Apple Springs and Mid-Valley Hospital.
Memorial Services will be held at 1 p.m., at the Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel in Okanogan on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012. Graveside Service will follow at the Riverside Cemetery.
Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
