Rodney Allen Gardner, 65, died of liver failure Aug. 16, 2013, at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, Wash. He was born May 26, 1948 to Arthur Lee and Edna F. Gardner in Morton, Wash.
He was the sixth of seven children and the youngest of three boys. He graduated from Okanogan High School in 1966. Prior to the second grade, he went to school in Randle, Wash.
He married Mary Hayes (McCarter) on May 20, 1972 in Okanogan. They were divorced in 1999. Rodney had been living the bachelor dream ever since.
Rodney served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from May 1968 to June 1970. He served in the 4th Bn 28th Artillery and was honorably discharged. He was a millwright at the Omak mill for a number of years before it closed.
Rodney was a volunteer firefighter and EMT for Okanogan for a number of years.
He is survived by his daughter, Sherri Strange, Okanogan; son, Shawn (Christeena) McCarter, Omak; two granddaughters and two grand fur-babies; special niece, Betty Parnell, Renton, WA.; special nephew, Dan Hanson, Malott, Wa.; numerous other nieces and nephews; brother, John Gardner Okanogan, WA.; sisters, Sally (Dennis) Galster, Centralia, WA., and Patricia (Leroy) Johnson, Phoenix, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Tom; and sisters, Nancy and Sandy.
