Zita “Zita Geodde” Julia Theis
April 19, 1923 - September 23, 2013
Zita Julia (Geodde) Theis, 90, of Omak Wash., went to be with the Lord Sept. 23, 2013, while surrounded by loved ones. She was born in Butte, Neb., to Franz Wilhelm Goedde and Ida Francis Hoefer on April 19, 1923.
At age 16, Zita and several family members drove across the country to Chelan where her two brothers had settled the previous year. A few years later, she moved to Okanogan where she met her future husband, Paul Theis, while working at the town’s grocery store. They married on June 4, 1946, in Wenatchee, Wash. The two of them settled on a ranch in Pleasant Valley, Wash., where they raised three sons. In 1969 they moved to a small farm on the Omak flats.
Zita was a strong, independent woman who remained on the farm after her husband’s death in 1975, continuing on through her mid 80’s. She took great pride in her gardening and working as a florist with Hughes Floral and John’s Flowers in the Omak and Okanogan area.
She also enjoyed baking, cooking, and canning. Another thing Zita held dear to her heart, was her strong faith and community within Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. She was extremely active in the parochial school fundraising events, and Alter Society. For years, she took great pride in arranging the flowers and plants in the church. Zita got her drive to succeed and stay busy from her grandfather who said, “Idleness is the devil’s advocate.”
Through the years, Zita loved family gatherings and seeing the great-grandchildren play. She was such a giving and caring mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed. The last six years, she lived at Apple Springs Assisted Living and liked to play dime bingo with her friends.
The family would like to thank those who helped keep the last years of her life peaceful and enjoyable. Thank you to Hospice of Omak for such outstanding care and help.
She is survived by Paul (Linda) Theis of Omak, Wash.; Jerry Theis of Okanogan, Wash.; and Randy (Rebecca) Theis of Omak, Wash.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Zita is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Theis; four brothers; and four sisters.
A memorial service was held for Zita Theis at the Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Okanogan, Wash., at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013. The Rosary will be held at 10 a.m. with visitation between the services.
The Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel is entrusted with the arrangements.
