Katherine Eleanor Hein of Fairbanks, Alaska and South Cle Elum, Wash., passed away peacefully at home in Fairbanks, Oct. 9, 2018.
Eleanor was born in 1929 to Phyllis and Ted Rooks. She was born in Cle Elum after her mother travelled down the mountains from Lester by train. She attended the one-room school at Lester through the primary grades. She graduated from Cle Elum High School in 1947. She attended Washington State College for one year and then married Ernest (Bud) Hein in 1949.
Eleanor and her brothers and cousins grew up together in the Lester and Stampede Pass area enjoying skiing, fishing, berry and mushroom picking and all outdoor activities. They all successfully competed in numerous skiing competitions throughout the Northwest. The family moved to South Cle Elum when Eleanor was in high school.
Eleanor spent most of her later years in Fairbanks. She enjoyed dip netting for salmon in the Copper River, picking low bush cranberries, and camping at their favorite place on Clearwater Lake near Delta Junction.
In Fairbanks, Eleanor and Bud were members of German Club and the Pioneers of Alaska. Eleanor served as President of the Pioneers for two terms. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Cle Elum and in Kearney, Mo. for a total of 73 years. She was also a member of the Military Order of the Cootie Auxiliary in Missouri.
Eleanor was a loving, fun mother who appreciated a good joke. She loved to play cards, bingo and dominos. She also was very fond of slot machines and liked to stop at any casino along the way. Eleanor was an excellent seamstress and always had many projects on which she was working. She worked at Fort Wainwright altering military uniforms for many years.
She spent the last several years of her life lovingly cared for by her son Gary and his wife Ursula and their children, and she was amused and protected by their many pets including her favorites, Pedro, Nicki and Chloe.
She is survived by daughter, Kerry Lynn Malone (Ralph); son, Gary (Ursula); granddaughter, Regina Clark (Joe); great-grandchildren, Tammy and Joe Jr.; granddaughter, Anna Ofelt (Erik); great-grandson, Hendrik; granddaughter, Xena Carr (Jon); great-grandson, Orion; grandson, Andy; daughter, Kathy Holmes (Jim); grandson, Grant Isaac (Laura Wells); great-grandchildren, Maxilian, Tiberius and Adriana; granddaughter, Angela Isaac; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death her husband, Ernest (Bud) Hein; her parents, Phyllis and Ted Rooks; and by her brothers, Ted Jr., Victor (Rocky), Robert; and an infant twin brother to Robert Rooks.
The family will plan a celebration of life for a future time.
