Reach out: Christians in Action shares the faith
Christians in Action will hold its annual Stampede outreach program Aug. 9-12 in the area west of the food court.
Since 1973, Christians of various churches have shared their music, testimonies, Bibles and cookies at the Omak Stampede and World-Famous Suicide Race. Christians in Action, a non-profit interdenominational corporation, sponsors the outreach.
All events are free to the public and Bibles will be provided to all rodeo contestants, said board member Kathleen Christensen.
Rodeo visitors can refresh with ice water, coffee and cookies while hearing a variety of musical styles and inspirational messages from the stage, said Christensen. Kids' activities, prayer partners and a variety of Bibles and literature will be available.
The music begins with a country gospel jamboree from 5:30-9 p.m. Thursday and coordinated by Rick Chase of Omak's New Hope Chapel. Additional musicians include Rev. J.C. Baughman, Dovie Winters, Mary Hemphill, Brock Hires, the Behrent Family and others from various churches.
Friday at 5:30 and 8 p.m. and Saturday, the Parks Family from Spokane bring Don's pedal steel and Patti's rich vocals to their gospel-style music. They travel all over the United States and minister weekly in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, according to Christensen.
Bringing contemporary worship music will be Carl, Brenda and Jeremy Behrent, Tiffany and Carey Brantner, and Phil and Shiloh Steffen. Also on Friday will be a Spanish language service at 7 p.m.
Saturday events begins at 4:30 p.m. with kids' praise from Omak Abundant Life Fellowship. Dani, Sarah and Laura Jeffreys share music for kids of all ages.
At 5:30 and 9:30 p.m. Firstborn Live! of Ferndale will perform bluesy rock music with members Joe Hawley, Lee Connors, Wayne Clark, Rick Sloot, Rosemary Reuss-Connors and Ed Pears.
The band began with construction workers Hawley and Connors performing at churches, fairs and Christian bikers events throughout the Northwest. It continues with new members bringing instrumental variety with accordion, harmonica, flute and keyboard.
The band has built a reputation for entertaining, energetic concerts, and performed recently in the Methow Valley and the Back To Blues Festival in Chiliwack, B.C., said Christensen. The band's Web site is www.firstbornlive.com.
At 6:30 p.m. will be Teen Volume with members Simeon Martin, Josiah Torba, Luke Redman and Dani, Sarah and Laura Jeffreys from several Okanogan area churches.
At 8 p.m. they will join with Ryan Guelich and Josh Richards for a drama presentation.
The Rev. Raul Martinez and Tonasket Foursquare Spanish Church will oversee a Spanish language service at 7 p.m. Guests will be Mr. and Mrs. Luis Laureano, Everett.
Sunday's Western church service begins with the coffee and breads at 8:30 a.m., and ends in time for the Stampede grand parade at 10.
The Rev. Jeff and Sheryl Gorman from Ellensburg Great Round-up Cowboy Church will share in song and message. Kids can practice roping with Gabrielle.
The church hosts cowboy Bible camps, junior rodeos and weekly church services. In 2005 the Gormans led a team to St. Petersburg, Russia, and began the first Cowboy Church of Russia that is still going strong, Christensen noted.
The Web site is www.greatroundup.org.
After the parade, around noon, Lee Orr and Ken MacLean of Tonasket will take the stage for country-style gospel music. The outreach ends at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Each day begins with a prayer circle for all events held during the rodeos. Circles are planned for 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 8:15 a.m. Sunday.
Sound technicians are Carl, Brenda and Jeremy Behrent and Michael Horton.
Tax-deductible donations may be sent to Christians in Action, P.O. Box 63, Okanogan. Board members, from five different churches, are Christensen, Ken Chalmers, Vicki James, Rick Baldwin, Cindy Adkins, Michael Horton and Creig Hedington.
