Corfe dodges mishaps to claim street stock main
By Brenda Starkey
Chronicle correspondent

Glen Corfe’s No. 41 car snagged first place in the street stock main event, which saw less than half the 13-car field finish the race at Eagle Track Raceway July 8.
The field staged for a rough and tumble race that saw crashes and mechanical failures. Six cars finished, but one that had been black flagged three times was disqualified.
At one point in the event, even the tow truck needed to be jumped to get started on the track.
Greg Fisher in No. 66 finished second.
Rob Cochran, racing the No. 1 car from Grand Forks, B.C. drove the fastest lap time, 24.438, and took the checkered flag in third place in the main.
No. 23 and No. 9 finished out of the money in fourth and fifth places, respectively.
Some of the cars that didn’t finish were Brian Whitney in No. 78, Bill Hallam in No. 88, Darrin Metcalf in No. 11X, Jack Betcher in No. 11 and Kevin Burley, a new drver at the track, in No. 63.
Corfe got an extra $100 purse for winning the class with the most cars. Trip Distributing, Colville, sponsored that prize.
Earlier in the day Cochran won the A trophy dash and Monty Betcher, racing No. 19 from Omak, captured first in the B dash.
Whitney, Tonasket, in the No. 78, racer won the eight-lap A heat with Corfe, Midway, capturing first in the B heat.
In modified racing Ron Rampley’s No. 17 racer won a hard-fought race in the main, dueling with Dan Stillings, Republic, in the No. 33 car to snatch second.
Six cars staged for the main. Rampley, Tonasket, was fastest in the modified time trials with a 24.765 time.
Casey Silverthorn, Tonasket, drove the No. 53 car to victory in the modified dash with Stillings snatching first in the dash.
Brian Head in the No. 48 car blew out his harmonic balancer during the main, ending his racing for the day.
In bump-to-pass action, John Harris in the No. 47 car won the dash, and John Alexander Jr., Colville, in No. 8 finished first in the heat.
Bill Hallam, Okanogan, in the No. 88 racer finished in second place in the main, behind Alexander, who captured first.
Hallam drove the fastest time trial in the division with a 26.591.
In fever four action, Steve Hood, Elmer City, was the fastest in time trials and also finished first in the main event in the No. 74 car. He also won the four-lap dash.
Ken Martin, Spangle, and his No. 14 racer snagged the checkered flag in the eight-lap heat.
In the mechanics’ race Dave Hotchkiss, Republic, drove the No. 64 street stock racer to finish first. Randy Sattler, Republic, captured the modified title in Stillings’ No. 33.
Russ Osborn snatched the bump-to-pass mechanics’ title with Doug Fehr taking the fever four mechanics’ trophy in the .08 car.
The No. .08 racer was a new entry at Eagle Track this week. Glen Castenson, Grand Forks, B.C., is the driver.
The next race will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 21, and will be sponsored by Beaver Trap Junction.
A special tribute will be made to Frank H. “Franky” Sieker who died during a fever four race on the track last July.
Sieker, who was entering his own car for the first time, died of an apparent heart attack. He lived in Grand Coulee.
Steve Hood will drive a backward checkered flag lap in Sieker’s honor, a tradition for a fallen racer. Seiker’s family will attend the race, according to Alana Strauch, a race organizer.
