Talk about a topsy-turvy 74th Omak Stampede rodeo Aug. 9-12.
Rough stock beat the heck out of cowboys Thursday night.
Cowboys turned the tables on Friday. In bareback riding, Ryan Gray of Cheney led the way with an 84 as four out of five riders reached the eight-second mark.
Gray tied for first overall with Cimmaron Gerke, Brighton, Colo., who picked up his 84 on Sunday.
Bulls proved to be the toughest critters every performance.
Marcus Michaelis, Caldwell, Idaho, was the lone rider Thursday night, scoring an 81. The rest got tossed to the arena dirt.
Tylee Lanham of Sweet, Idaho, took top honors with an 85 on Friday night, when only two of 13 bulls were ridden.
Score it 11-1 for bulls Saturday night.
In the end, only Michaelis could stay on for two go-rounds, scoring a total of 165.
When the dust cleared Sunday, B.J. Campbell of Benton City claimed the all-around title after taking second in steer wrestling and, with partner Brandon Beers of Powell Butte, Ore., finished second in team roping.
Josh Reynolds got one of the few complete saddle bronc rides Thursday night, scoring an 86 in bareback that stood up the rest of the weekend for first place.
Mike Johnson, Henryetta, Okla., took top average in tie-down roping at 19.8 seconds.
Trevor Knowles, Mount Vernon, Ore., took the average in steer wrestling at 9.1 seconds.
In team roping, Chris Lawson, Gonzales, Texas, and Broc Cresta, Santa Rosa, Calif., secured the average with a 6.2-second run on Sunday for a total of 12.2 (their 6.0 in the first go was tops in that go-round).
Brenda Mays, Terrebonne, Ore., barely took top time in barrel racing at 17.15 seconds. Lisa Lockhart, Oelrichs, S.D., nearly pulled off an upset Sunday afternoon with a run of 17.16 seconds.
Mays entered the weekend ranked No. 5 in Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association standings with winnings of $29,695 (Professional Women’s Barrel Racing now is a subsidiary of PRCA). The $2,280 Mays won could get her a lot closer to fourth place.
Lockhart entered ranked 23rd with $12,052.00.
No. 1-ranked Brittany Pozzi-Pharr, Victoria, Texas, took fourth on Sunday at 17.39. She’s got winnings of $59,103 so far this year.
In mutton bustin’, Sterling Ritch, a 4-year-old from Omak, stayed aboard 15.8 seconds on Sunday for the longest ride of the four-day rodeo.
Other mutton bustin’ winners included Thursday, Braden Hennigs, Okanogan, 14.08 seconds; Friday, Shantana Pakootas, 6, Omak, 11.2 seconds, and Saturday, Taryn Hoskins, 4, Parma, Idaho, 4.84 seconds.
Total payout for the rodeo was $80,479.25.
