Republic racers move up, move down standings
By Brenda Starkey
Chronicle correspondent

Unexpected turns of events at Eagle Track Raceway during the season championship may have made major changes in the season’s points race Saturday as Greg Fisher in the No. 66 street stock car, Tony Berkley in No. 08 modified and Ken Martin’s No. 14 fever four car won their main events.
Race organizer Buck Strauch, who died earlier in the day, was honored by a special exhibition race, the final event of the season.
The ambulance crew that’s always on hand for the races responded to a mishap during a special lawnmower race in the center track, but it appeared that the driver of the No. 83 machine was all right as he was up and moving around.
Only one bump-to-pass car raced in the season championship. John Alexander in the No. 8 car earned points by racing against himself while the street stock cars were on the track.
He went to the pits in the 14th lap, but since he was at the top of the points race going into the day he’ll finish out front for the season.
Bill Hallam, whose No. 88 street stock car ran the fastest in time trials Saturday, didn’t race in bump to pass, but will maintain his second place season status since none of the other competitors raced either.
In street stock, Fisher took the lead in the final lap to finish ahead of Randy Hotchkiss in No. 64 and Rob Cochran in the No. 1 car.
Brian Whitney, who had a commanding 124-point lead for the season before the race, drove No. 78, a Dodge Dart, to a fourth place finish.
Darrin Metcalf in the No.11X car led the first five laps with Cochran moving out front in lap five. Fisher moved into second place in lap six then took the lead in the 13th lap.
     Cochran held onto second place.
Whitney passed his way into fourth place during lap 17 and into third two laps later. Hallam moved into fourth during the 20th lap.
Andy Miller in No. 9 worked his way into second place during the 22nd lap but went to the pits in lap 28.
Cochran took the lead briefly in lap 29, but was passed by Fisher and Hotchkiss during the final lap.
Cochran won the street stock B dash with Cody Simons, Kevin Burley and Miller behind him. In the A dash it was Hallam followed by Whitney, Hotchkiss and Glen Corfe in No. 41.
In the B heat Miller finished first, Cochran was second, Simons third and Metcalf fourth.
Whitney won the A heat with Hotchkiss finishing second. The yellow flag came out in the third and fifth laps with Corfe and Hotchkiss out of the race following a mishap in lap five.
Dan Stillings, whose No. 33 modified car was involved in a crash during the last race, was sidelined because of a knee injury. He was second in the points race prior to the season championship behind Ron Rampley.
Berkley, who was eighth in the standings coming into Saturday’s race, took the lead in the second lap of the main and held on to the end.
Randy Sattler, who was fourth in points, moved into second place in lap 21 but was passed by Dave Morgan in the No. 77 car in the next lap.
Morgan, who ran the fastest modified time trial, held onto second through three laps, but then spun out and finished fifth.
Sattler’s No. 99 car finished in second and Rampley third. Brian Head in the No. 48 car finished fourth.
Berkley won the modified dash followed by Rampley and Sattler. Morgan went to the pits in the third lap.
In the heat, Head took first, Sattler second followed by Berkley, Rampley and Morgan.
In fever four action, Ken Martin, who was second in the points race coming into the championship race, led from the first lap of the main event.
Jim Petty in No. 42 ran second through the eighth lap when points leader Steve Hood in No. 74 passed him in the ninth.
Newcomer Greg Hector in car No. 87 finished fourth.
Hood finished first in both the dash and the heat. In the dash, Petty took second, Hector third and Martin fourth.
In the heat Martin finished second, Petty third and Hector fourth.
Rob Adams, Republic, brought his sprint car for a special exhibition race. Strauch was supposed to drive it in a special exhibition race, but as it turned out, Adams, Sattler, Hotchkiss and Russ Osborn in the modified No. 00 car drove the exhibition race to honor Strauch.
“This was for Buck,” Adams said.
There will be a memorial for Strauch, who succumbed to liver cancer, next Sunday, Aug. 26, at Eagle Track Raceway.
