Allen Allie, Jerry Day, and Jason and Jay VanderWeide took first place at the 11th annual Grubstake Open Golf Tournament Aug. 18 at Okanogan Valley Golf Club.
The foursome finished with a net score of 54 to top a field of 11 teams.
“We did a little better than last year,” said tournament coordinator Nancy Gill. “It probably was the coolest tournament we’ve had. Usually this time of the year it’s really hot down there.”
Gill said the event raised about $1,400 that will be used to support the Conconully Chamber of Commerce’s eight annual events and community projects.
Those include outhouse races and dogsled races in the winter, a fishing derby opening week of general fishing in April, arts and crafts in May, cowboy caviar in June, Fourth of July car show, parade and gunfight show, Miners Days in August, and Stew and Brew in September.
Conconully Chamber of Commerce hosted the tournament. Four-member teams played 18 holes in a scramble format.
Taking second were Tonasket’s Glen Huber, Joe and Reed Lorz, and Danny Vassar at 55.
Closest-to-the-pin prizes went to Joe Lorz and Phil Skirko. Long drivers went to Jack Hein and Jay VanderWeide.
Winning the drawing for Seattle Mariner tickets was the team of Kirk Anderson, Jim Blue, Greg Grattan and Phil Skirko.
John King, Everett, donates the tickets annually.
Assisting Gill were Dave Carpenter, Mike and Joan Leckvold, Chris Merritt, and Dan, Gary and John King.
“They helped me at the golf course all day long with the tournament,” said Gill.
Gill moved to Conconully about 11 years ago, about the time the fire department started the tournament. She operates Kozy Cabins and RV Park.
“I have a lot of friends that are golfers, and a lot of these people came from the Everett area where I came from,” she said. “They come over and golf.”
