Gene Smith may have had lengthy legs on the 36th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and dropped nine of his 16 sled dogs, but the 64-year-old from Riverside did finish on Sunday.
Smith finished 75th in the race that started with a record 96 mushers officially hitting the trail between Anchorage and Nome March 2 on an 1,100-mile odyssey.
He averaged 3.06 mph on the trek. Smith crossed the finish line at 6:47 p.m. Sunday, March 16, after racing for 14 days, three hours, 47 minutes and 37 seconds.
Since then 17 teams did not finish. Three teams as of Monday morning were still trying to finish.
