Okanogan team wins at Spokane
A fifth-grade boys’ basketball team wrapped up its season in a big way - winning the North Spokane Classic March 14-16.
Teams at the tournament found stopping Okanogan (24-3) nearly impossible.
Okanogan won 33-12 over Cashmere, 35-22 over Freeman, 52-18 over Colville and 48-31 over Lakeside in pool play.
In the semi-finals, Okanogan won 43-25 over Chelan before taking on Freeman and winning 30-15.
In the first game against Freeman, A.J. Block scored 26 points that included hitting seven three-point shots. The fourth grader, who is playing up a grade, hit six of nine in the first half and hit four in a row at one point.
So when Freeman played Okanogan in the championship, and Block came out and hit a three to start the game, a time out was taken immediately.
Freeman then went to a box-and-one defense concentrating on Block.
That, said Smith, opened up the game inside.
