Omak High School tennis advanced three players into semi-final matches and three others remain alive in consolation play for the second week of the district tournament.
District opened May 10 at Cashmere High School. Play resumes at 11 a.m. this Saturday, May 17, at the school.
The district qualifies three to state in singles and doubles on the boys’ side to regionals. The girls automatically qualify the top two to regionals. The third-place finishers for girls (singles and doubles) will play a play-in match against the third-place finishers from the Northeast 1A league for a berth to regionals.
Omak coach Lance O’Dell said this year’s format called for No. 1 and No. 2 seeds to get two byes before starting play. That meant second-seeded Bailey Talmadge in singles along with second-seeded Kara Smith and Angela Caryl sat more than six hours before hitting the court for quarterfinal matches.
Talmadge opened play with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 decision over Brewster’s Jennifer Webster. Saturday, Talmadge will take on Okanogan’s Kelsey Hinger in a semi-final match.
Smith and Caryl won 6-0, 6-4 over Cashmere’s Christy Mehelich and Molly Newberry. Omak will face another Cashmere pair, Chelsey Pittsinger and Elyse Fike in the semis.
On the consolation side, Blair Talmadge started with a bye and won 6-1, 6-1 over Lake Roosevelt’s Carla Reyes.
Talmadge dropped into the consolation bracket with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Cascade’s Leah Newell in the quarterfinals.
She will face Brewster’s Taylor LaMoreaux on Saturday.
The doubles team of Sarah Hein and Ashley Berntsen opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tonasket’s Ashlyn Salzman and Kelsey Gallas, and won 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (10-8) over Okanogan’s Ellen Rodgers and Mackenzie Craig.
In the quarterfinals, Hein and Berntsen fell to No. 1 seed Devan Courtois and Alex Worthen from Cashmere. Hein and Berntsen will open the second week against Tonasket’s Chelsea Rhodes and Melissa Martinez.
On the boys’ side, No. 3 seed Tyler Hendrick and Kailer Lawson reached the semifinals. They opened with a bye then a 6-3, 6-3 win over Cascade’s Michael Autenreith and Alex Steele.
In the quarterfinals, Hendrick and Lawson won 6-0, 6-4 over Cashmere’s Drew Ankeny and Andrew Thrasher.
They will play No. 2 seeded Cameron Schmidt and Cody Schmidt of Cashmere in the semifinals.
Also still alive for regionals was Chandler Lewis at No. 1 boys’ singles.
He opened with a bye then won 6-1, 6-1 over Lake Roosevelt’s Huy Le.
Lewis fell 6-4, 6-3 to Cashmere’s Matt Taylor in the quarterfinals.
Lewis opens the second weekend of play against Tonasket’s Brett Hendrick in a loser out match.
Coach O’Dell said others who played well included Bridget Skaarvold and Rachel Martinez in girls’ doubles, and Dillon Dorn in singles, who won their first matches and lost their second; Josh Gray, who lost his first match in three sets; and Brad Ives and Sean VanTassel, who lost their first match.
