Okanogan and Omak high school golf teams advanced players from district to the regional tournament that was to be played May 5 at Leavenworth.
Regionals (Caribou Trail League plus Northeast A League) are set for Tuesday, May 13, at Chelan Golf Course. The top 22 boys and eight girls earn berths to state at North Bellingham Golf Course.
Okanogan (second, 349) will send the most boys to the tournament with five. That’s one more than league champion Chelan (322) and two more than highly touted Cascade (third, 354).
Making second-team all-league were Tanner Kelley (84), Ryan Price (86) and Arley Medrano (87).
Also advancing were Brent Olson (92) and Brady Bonser (95).
Okanogan’s Kelsey Shacklett carded a 103 to earn second-team all-league honors and advance to regional play.
Omak qualified Eric Farley (89) and Chace Taber (92) to regionals. Farley was an honorable mention all-league selection.
Other Omak golfers included Zach Day 101 (his best score of the year), Austin Baker 103, Cody Brown 110 and Justin LaDoux 125, reported Omak coach Duane Erickson.
“We had a talk before the match,” Okanogan coach Aaron Nickelson said of his team. “We talked about how well they have played this year, being second in the league to a very talented Chelan team with two returning state champs.
“I told them how proud I was of their efforts,” he said. “They showed me a copy of a newspaper article that talked only of Chelan and Cascade in describing the upcoming district tournament.
“The team felt a little slighted,” he said, adding, “When we play today, we’ll remind them we’ve been here all year.”
Other schools and number of boys they advanced to regionals include Brewster (1), Cashmere (1) and Lake Roosevelt (2).
Cascade girls won the team district title. They were the only school with enough players to qualify as a team, noted Nickelson.
