Ferriell, Leavell fare well at district tennis
Tonasket tennis players Zachary Ferriell and Lee Leavell advanced to the semifinals of the District 6 1A tournament May 10 at Cashmere High School and will play each other for a state berth.
Ferriell earned a bye into the quarterfinals and then beat Cascade’s Isaac Reister 6-1, 6-4 to earn a spot in the semis.
Leavell advanced by beating Cashmere’s Sang Cho 6-0, 6-2 in the second round and then topped Okanogan’s Will Giovacchini 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Ferriell and Leavell will face each other May 17, with the winner advancing to the championship match.      Brett Hendricks lost to top-seeded Tyson McGuffin of Chelan in the quarterfinals and will play a consolation match May 17 against Omak’s Chandler Lewis. Hendricks still has a chance to earn the third and final seed to the state tournament.
Tonasket’s doubles duo of Mayte Ortega and Stacia Nixon beat Omak’s Rachel Martinez and Bridget Skaarvold in the second round but fell to Cascade’s Missy Allen and Sonia Gorski in the quarterfinals. The pair will play Ashley Berntsen and Sarah Hein of Omak in a consolation match on May 17 and still have a chance at the third and final state berth.
