Bull riders strike paydirt at Stampede
By Al Camp
Chronicle staff

A pair of bull riders broke a three-day-long string of wins by the bulls to collect more than $5,000 each at the 75th Omak Stampede rodeo held Aug. 7-10.
With each passing day the pot for a full eight-second bull ride rose to more than $11,000 after the bulls went undefeated the first three nights of the rodeo.
The first rider out Sunday, Colin McTaggart of Las Vegas, Nev., broke the string with a 79-point ride. That was good for $5,938.50 or about $742 per second.
On the next to last ride, Clayton Foltyn of El Campo, Texas, got sideways several times during his ride on Rapid Reloader. Foltyn reloaded each time and hung on, sideways, to the end to earn the rest of the pot, $5,161.50.
The riders also received nearly $600 in travel money, according to circuit secretary Edie Longfellow.
Lindsay Sears of Nanton, Alberta, set an unofficial arena record of 16.96 seconds to claim first in barrel racing.
In bareback, Ryan Gray, Cheney, on Iron Jolt, scored an 83 on Sunday to tie for first with Tyler Barnes, Prineville, Ore.
Shane Moran, Roundup, Mont., made it look easy in taking first place money in saddle bronc. He scored an 84 on Devil Lady to slip into the top spot ahead of Reed Hunsucker, Cody, Wyo., and J.J. Elshere, Quinn, S.D., who each had 83s in earlier rodeos.
Of note, Hunsucker scored his mark on Devil Lady.
Luke Branquinho, Los Alamos, Calif., thrilled the crowd with a 3.8 second run in steer wrestling, which gave him first for the day and comfortably moved him into the overall top spot at 8.9 seconds.
This year’s rodeo marked the last time the event will be held in the current stadium. A new facility, built in the same place, is expected to be completed for next year.
This year’s rodeo held two empty saddles.
On Saturday a crowd estimated at 8,500 paid tribute to the passing of Jud Lockwood, who was said to have been at the first Stampede rodeo and held posts including president with the Stampede Association.
Sunday’s audience saluted Morris Marcellay, a long-time horse owner whose horses competed often in the World-Famous Suicide Race. Sir Charge and son Gabe Marcellay won the event in 1978, 1983 and 1985.
Making the celebration of the 75th Stampede rodeo special were the return of several crowd favorites, including entertainer One Armed Bandit, rodeo clown Dwayne Hargo, and announcer Steve Kenyon.
