Grizzly Mountain takes express way to Pendleton title

Oliver Pakootas takes off for Grizzly Mountain Express during relay races at the county fair.

The Grizzly Mountain Express won the Pendleton Round-Up Indian Relay Sept. 9-13 after several days of grueling heats.
Oliver Pakootas was the winning rider. Mugger was Winfred Pakootas.
Holders were Kerry Carden and Julian Vargas.
The team, which has tried to win the event for several years, returned with championship buckles (with turquoise stones), Pendleton blankets and coats, along with more than $2,000 in winnings.
Ashley Zacherle won the women’s relay race.
Other county men’s relay teams competing included those with Tyler Peasley, George Marchand, Rocky Timentwa (he broke an arm), Tyson Williams and Bud Gottfriedson.
