CHELAN — Omak picked up its second-straight District 6 1A wrestling title by relying on its depth to top league-champ Cashmere.
“This is the first time Omak has been two-time district champs,” Coach Dewy Ives said, whose team built a 20-point lead the first day and never looked back.
Omak’s Jordan “Sasky” Velasco improved to 27-0 in claiming the 215-pound title during district Feb. 5-6. He was named at the tournament Wrestler of the Year in the Caribou Trail League.
Cashmere picked up four titles from its seven wrestlers in the finals. Omak finished with two champs out of eight in the finals.
The Pioneers beat Cashmere by 37.5 points by picking up points from its junior varsity wrestlers, who were not eligible to score in the league dual that Cashmere won at the end of the year. Omak sends 17 to the regional tournament.
Joining Velasco on the top of the podium was Dylan Green, who was first 189 pounds.
Ives pointed to one highlight that showed how the team got points. Senior Boomer Harvill, who is the No. 2 heavyweight behind Brad Ives, pinned No. 2 seeded John DeLap, Okanogan, in the quarterfinals. Ives advanced to the finals with a 5-2 decision over Harvill.
DeLap came back through the bracket and met Harvill in the match for third- and fourth-place, getting a first-period pin.
Tonasket did not sport a lot of depth, but still finished third as a team. Tigers champs included Tyler Laurie at 130, Andrew Grillo at 160 and Keegan McCormick at 171.
Seeded No. 3, Laurie took some by surprise by taking the title. He’d wrestled all but the final weeks of the season at 135 pounds while reducing weight under state guidelines. Laurie barely reached the finals, having to hold off Omak’s Deshawn Dunham 15-14 in the semifinals.
At 171, Trudeaux led 11-6 after both wrestlers got takedowns and near falls.
“Both wrestlers like throws to the back for a takedown,” Tonasket coach Dave Mitchell said. “Kyle got a couple of them in the first round. Keegan got one in the second round, only he was able to secure the pin.”
Also taking titles were Ethan Colbert, Okanogan, at 152 and Gary Sumerlin, Lake Roosevelt, at 285.
Regionals starts at 6 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 12, at Tonasket High School with crossover, loser-out matches.
Winners advance to Saturday competition that starts at 9:30 a.m. Finals are tentatively set for 6:30 p.m., though they could start earlier, Mitchell said.
The top four from regionals earn berths to state Feb. 19-20 at the Tacoma Dome.
