Ferry County prosecuting attorney found dead

Emma Paulsen

REPUBLIC — Investigators are calling the death of the Ferry County prosecuting attorney a suicide.

The body of Emma Paulsen, 38, of Republic, was found shortly after 10 last night in Paulsen's home, the Ferry County Sheriff’s Office said.

Okanogan County Coroner’s and Stevens County Sherriff’s offices investigated the death and determined it was a suicide.

"She was alone when it occurred," Okanogan County Coroner Dave Rodriguez said Friday afternoon. "Her husband and two children were in Spokane."

“The Okanogan Coroner’s Office and the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office were called to conduct an investigation into the death,” a sheriff's office spokesman said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Ms. Paulsen during this trying time.”

Paulsen was elected as Ferry County's prosecuting attorney Nov. 4, 2014, in a landslide over opponent James A. von Sauer. Prior to moving to Republic and running for office, Paulsen worked in the Okanogan County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

Paulsen leaves behind her estranged husband, Chris Thew, and two children.
