WASHINGTON, D.C. — The new 4th Congressional District congressman was sworn into office today.

Dan Newhouse, a Republican and farmer from Sunnyside, replaces Doc Hastings as the representative for Central Washington.

“It is an honor to be entrusted by the citizens of Central Washington to represent them in Congress, and I am humbled by the duty to bring our region's concerns to the nation's capital," Newhouse said after taking the oath of office. “When I raised my right hand and swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution, I was reminded of the great responsibility to act in accordance with the values that make our nation great: limited government, individual freedom and economic opportunity."

Newhouse will represent Okanogan, Douglas, Grant, Yakima, Franklin, Adams and Benton counties on Capitol Hill.

He defeated Republican farmer Clint Didier of Eltopia in the Nov. 4 general election to win the seat in Congress.

"Taxpayers and hard-working families in Central Washington deserve a steadfast commitment to always listen and work hard on common sense solutions that address the challenges we face," Newhouse said. "It's Congress' job to work together to restore fiscal accountability and ensure a limited federal government that is effective in fulfilling its responsibilities rather than a perpetrator of burdensome regulations."

Newhouse said he's "optimistic" that he can get results for his constituents.

He has been assigned to three committees: agriculture, natural resources, and science, space and technology.

On his first day in office, Newhouse co-sponsored a balanced budget amendment, as well as bills to repeal the Affordable Care Act (dubbed "Obamacare") and reform the nations tax system.
