TONASKET — A Tonasket High School librarian was released from the Okanogan County Jail earlier today after a preliminary hearing for allegedly having sex with a student.

Elizabeth A. Kinkade, 37, was arrested and booked into the jail yesterday on five counts of first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor.

Okanogan County Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Branden Platter said Kinkade wasn’t charged at the preliminary hearing. Arraignment is set for June 2.

Platter said he has asked Okanogan County Superior Court to decide probable cause on five charges; he has until 5 p.m. Friday to file the paperwork.

Kinkade was released from jail on her own personal recognizance, according to the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office.

“At this time, the Tonasket Police Department is confident that there are no other alleged victims nor did any of the incidents occur on school property,” the department said.

Police Chief Robert Burks was not available for comment this afternoon.

Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said deputies were called out to the Kinkade residence for reports of shots fired Monday.

Elizabeth Kinkade allegedly told her husband, Mark A. Kinkade, 43, that she had been having an affair and was suspended by the school, Rogers said.

Mark Kinkade allegedly went outside to his car, grabbed his gun and shot it into the air, Rogers said.

While the deputies were still at the scene, the sheriff said school Superintendent Paul Turner pulled into the driveway and allegedly asked them to investigate and arrest Kinkade. The deputies told him it was within the Tonasket Police Department’s jurisdiction, Rogers said.

The student is now 18, Rogers said.

Turner and high school Principal Jeff Hardesty did not immediately return requests for comment.

School Board Chairman Jerry Asmussen and board members Jerry Caton, Ty Olson and Catherine Stangland also could not be reached for comment.
