Just ducky

Members of the Winthrop Kiwanis Club dump ducks into the Chewuch River during the 2019 duck race. The race has been a club fundraiser for at least 15 years, said member Roy Reiber. “With the Bite of the Methow canceled and no pulled pork sales at 49er (Days), we need this race to do well,” he said of the club’s two major fundraisers, which were canceled because of COVID-19 concerns. “Every Labor Day we drop 2,000-plus ducks off the Chewuch River bridge in downtown Winthrop and retrieve them at the Methow River bridge in south Winthrop. The first five ducks to finish will win their renter money - $400 for first, $200 for second, $100 for third and $50 for fourth and fifth,” said Reiber. Ducks are collected by Kiwanians, Key Club members or race fans. Ducks may be purchased by contacting any Winthrop Kiwanis Club member.
