OMAK – A trivia quiz will be part of the Okanogan Valley Orchestra and Chorus season-opening concert Saturday, Oct. 20.
“Musical Pursuit” will include a variety of music, ranging from Queen to Berlioz, plus the quiz that can be played on cellphones.
Curtain time is 3 p.m. in the Omak Performing Arts Center, 14 S. Cedar St.
Matt Brown and Jonathan McBride, musical directors for the orchestra and chorus, respectively, have chosen “an eclectic mix of music,” said spokeswoman Judy Johnston.
The chorus will perform a Chopin prelude, a Beethoven spoof called “Beethoven’s Wig,” a piece from “HMS Pinafore,” the rock anthem “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, plus modern movie music from “La La Land” and “The Lord of The Rings.”
The orchestra will perform Edvard Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King” from “Peer Gynt Suite;” “Mars” from Gustav Holst’s “The Planets;” Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty Waltz,” and “March to the Scaffold” by Berlioz.
Audience members who want to participate in the quiz may access an app on their smartphones to play along by choosing among multiple choice possibilities on the center’s projection screen.
“Quiz questions are designed to let the music give you the answers, those delicious ‘aha’ moments that are so fun,” said Joynston. “Directions will be given at the concert and it is promised to be easy, even for the technologically challenged.
“We have the most fun at our concerts when the audience is actively engaged. Young people who ‘play’ along will learn some interesting facts and we know everyone will walk away with a smile, especially the winners of some great prizes.”
Admission is by individual or season ticket, which may be purchased at the concert or by contacting Johnston at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The season ticket provides admittance to all four concerts plus, for the first time, the community musical in May. Youth age 14 and younger will be admitted free.
