Poetry recitation contest is Jan. 16

OKANOGAN – The 11th annual Poetry Out Loud recitation contest will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 16 in the Okanogan High School cafetorium, 244 S. Fifth Ave.

The event is open to the public, although seating is limited.

Okanogan finalists are Reily Morrison-Nelson, Sylvanna Read, Anna Arroyo, McKenna Roberts, Madeline Luther, Allie Eylar, Scarlett Rivas, Kylien Vance, Leithan Gillespie, Livia Freel, Katie M. Chilcote, Dallas Heindselman, Abbi Albee, Zuleika Provstgaard and Bailey Cline.

The winner receives $100 and will move on to the regional contest Jan. 31 at the Downtown Library in Spokane. The regional winner moves on to the state championship March 2 in Tacoma and the state champion receives an all-expenses-paid trip for two to compete for $50,000 in scholarships in Washington, D.C.

Locally, the runner up receives $75 and the third place winner gets $35.

Okanogan English teacher Dennis P. O’Connor is organizing the contest and will be master of ceremonies. Guest judges will be Bud Gardner, Peter Donahue and Amy Cheeseman.

Cash prize donors are the Okanogan Kiwanis Club, Bob and Janet Shacklett, Dennis and Julia O’Connor, Richard and Mary Johnson, Dan and Susan Brown, Kendal and Shawn Ingraham, Darcy and Dean Klepec, and Ashley and Bryon Goetz. Additional donations will be accepted.
