EAST WENATCHEE — The 18-year-old man who died in a car accident last week on Sunset Highway has been identified as Zahir Lopez, Brewster, according to Tanner Bateman, Douglas County deputy coroner.
Lopez’s vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with another vehicle Aug. 23, East Wenatchee Police said.
Bateman said the autopsy report listed positional asphyxia as the official cause of death.
The report found no alcohol or drugs present at Lopez’s time of death, but also said that he was not wearing a seatbelt.
Lopez graduated from Brewster High School in 2021. According to the school’s Facebook page, Lopez’s family had a viewing Sunday, Aug. 29, and a Mass followed by the burial on Monday, Aug. 30.
Lopez “brought so much love and happiness to those that knew him,” the district said. “Prayers for his family and our community are greatly appreciated.”
More than 40 others commented on the school’s post offering their prayers and wishes for the family and friends of Lopez.
“My deepest condolences to his family,” one commenter said. “There are no words for this pain. He gave everyone unforgettable memories of being a happy and social boy.”
Names of the other vehicle’s occupants have not been released.
