Motorcyclist killed in head-on collision

Joseph E. Strutzel, 78, of Monitor, sits in his pickup truck at the intersection of U.S. Highway 2 and Eastmont Extension following a crash that fatally injured Brett B. Hendrick, 23, of East Wenatchee.

EAST WENATCHEE — A local man was killed shortly after noon today when his motorcycle was struck head-on by a pickup truck at about 12:19 p.m.

Brett B. Hendrick, 23, of East Wenatchee and formerly of Tonasket, died from crash-related injuries at Confluence Health in Wenatchee.

The driver of the pickup, Joseph E. Strutzel, 78, of Monitor, has been arrested for hit-and-run, Douglas County Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal said.

Hendrick was eastbound on the new Eastmont Extension about 500 yards east of the U.S. Highway intersection when he was struck, the sheriff said.

"Witnesses said a westbound pickup truck crossed the double yellow line and hit the motorcycle head-on," Gjesdal said.

Hendrick was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Strutzel, drove away from the scene, but vehicular damage halted his escape at the highway intersection, Gjesdal said.

Eastmont Extension will be closed for several hours while Washington State Patrol and Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputies investigate the fatal case.

"All of the agencies working on this case extend deepest condolences to the family of the victim," Gjesdal said.
