TONASKET – The Tonasket Police Department reports several citizens have recently been victims of phone scams.

One scam involves people getting a phone call claiming the person has won a large sum of money. The caller asks them to send cash to claim their money.

Tonasket police advise if you have legitimately won money, no reputable company will charge you money to claim your prize, and ask you to send cash. The police ask you report receiving any calls of this nature.

Another current scam people are reporting is receiving a call by someone claiming your child or grandchild is in jail. The caller asks them to purchase “gift cards” to get their relative out of jail. The call is made more authentic-sounding with back ground noise sounding like your family member. Tonasket police advise no jail will call you on the phone and ask for bail money via gift cards. Please report any calls of this nature.

“If you are ever in doubt, call us and ask questions before ever committing to any payment over the phone,” said Chief Darin Odegaard. The Tonasket Police Station can be reached at their new, temporary location in the Tonasket Visitor and Business Resource Center at their same phone number, 509-486-4677.
