Louise Suzanne Tollefson Rains, 101, of Malott, Wash. passed away at home March 18, 2021. Louise was born Feb. 12, 1920 to Michael and Suzan Jayko in Tacoma, Wash. She was the oldest of three children.
After graduating from the College of Puget Sound, she started a teaching career that spanned nearly three decades. In 1946, while teaching in Monroe, she met and married Robert O. Tollefson, who she had three sons with. In 1950 they moved to Malott where she started teaching for the Okanogan School District. Along with teaching she and her husband ran an orchard and raised cattle. In 1964 her husband passed away from a heart attack. After a few years of raising her sons alone, she married Charles Rains in 1968. She and her youngest son Richard joined Charley and his three children, JoDee, Kim, and Kurt on the ranch. After retirement she and Charley did something she had always loved to do and traveled all over North America and Mexico. In 2011 her husband Charley passed away in his sleep and she moved to her son Richard’s where she lived happily for the last years of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both her brothers, Michael and Lawrence Jayko; one son, David Tollefson; and one son-in-law, Richard Greenaway. She is survived by her son, Robert (Ronna) Tollefson, of Omak, Wash.; and Richard Tollefson, of Malott; three stepchildren, JoDee Greenaway, of Tacoma, Kim Binner, of Wenatchee, Wash., and Kurt Rains, of Malott; and her sister-in-law, Joan Jayko, of California. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and good friends. It is hard to say how many lives she touched both in her teaching career and her personal life, but she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
