Outhouses flow down Main Street

David Wells gets sprayed with slush as the sitter on the Boobie Bomber Team competing against the Butt Hut.

CONCONULLY – Warm temperatures brought out the crowds and produced lots of slushy snow for this year’s 35th annual Conconully Outhouse Races on Saturday, Jan. 19.

“I had several entries from the west side say they saw the story on King 5 Evening show and decided to come over and watch the race,” spokeswoman Janet Warner said. “More than 75 percent were out of town beyond 50 miles. We figured there were between 2,000-2,500 folks in town watching the races.”

There were several new entries this year, Warner said, with no pooper able to win more than two categories.

Winners were awarded their prize by Omak Stampede Queen Vanessa Pershing. The prizes included a handy corn cob.

The pink Boobie Bomber Team ran away with the people’s choice for best costume.

Gone Logging was voted people's choice as best outhouse.

Speed was down due to the icy, wet, slippery slush on Main Street, but there was still close racing and entries sliding off course into protective hay bales.

The Gable Family brought a blast from the past, a two-hole house.

As told by the race committee, hundreds of years ago the out-back shack had a big hole for adults and a smaller one for a child.

There were lots of videos and cameras blazing away each race, including Donni Reddington of Mazama capturing images of her favorite subject.

She collects miniature outhouses and she was researching the possibility of several in her small community building a racer for next year.

“This is my first time here,” she said. “We’re going to have a building party. It’s pretty exciting. I am impressed by the turnout. Great event for this time of year.”

“It’s really cool they do this,” said Lilla Reilly, 15, Tacoma. “I didn’t think I’d ever see this.

“I like how they dress them (outhouses) up,” she said. “They are having fun. It’s fun to be here.”

A trio of University of Washington students attended, led by Jackie Bollinger, who lives in Wenatchee when not a student.

“I’ve been coming off and on since I was 4,” Bollinger said. “I’ve been here the last four years.”

She talked friends Sophie Cohanim and Portia Cao to check out the race.

“It’s interesting,” said Cao with a laugh. “I don’t think anyone in Seattle knows of it.”

Her favorite part of the event - “I like the boobie one.”

“I love it, lots of fun,” said Cohanim. “The outhouses are really creative. Jackie told us about it. It’s a cool idea.”
