OKANOGAN – Six regional wrestling schools, three with teams, competed in an all-girl mix-and-match on Jan. 15 in Dawson Gym.

“It was a good night of girl-only wrestling,” Okanogan coach Andy Knutson said. “All the girls got two matches and some three. We hope to do it again next year and expand.”

There were three rounds, with teams from host Okanogan along with Tonasket and Quincy, plus wrestlers from Cashmere, Oroville and the Brewster-Pateros co-op.

“It was a great idea on Okanogan coach Andy Knutson’s part to have a girls’ wrestling night,” said Oroville coach Chuck Ricevuto. “I am sure all the girls felt a little more special.”

The Hornets’ Taralynn Fox went 2-0 (technical fall and pin) at 125 and remains undefeated, Ricevuto said.

Melinda Clark went 1-1, with the win being a pin.

“I believe it was a successful night of female wrestling for the Okanogan Valley and beyond,” said Okanogan assistant coach Lee Morrison. “The area in which we live in doesn’t have a huge demand for female wrestling, which is disappointing. But we’re trying to change that.

“In time, other local teams will hop on board with female wrestling programs as well. In order for female wrestling to succeed, this is a must. Thanks to all who attended our first ladies mix and match.”
