TONASKET - The Tonasket High School wrestling team and its nine champions earned homemade desserts at the Tigers’ Apple Pie Jamboree on Jan. 12.

Tonasket champions, who each received a small apple pie, included Waylon Thomas (106), Waylon Wilson (113), Colin Silverthorn (120), Dawson Bretz (126), Kevin Sanabria (138), Garrett Wilson (152), Austin Wood (160) and Isaac Gomez (182.

The Tigers, which as a team received a large apple pie, finished with 215.5 points, easily outdistancing second-place Cascade at 128.

“A great weekend for the boys at our own Apple Pie tournament,” said coach Cole Denison. “Thank you to all of the people who helped with the tournament. I can’t express how it feels to have such tremendous support out there. We sure appreciate everything that you all do.”

Okanogan’s Dalton Swayze took the 195-pound title.

Second-place finishes went to Tonasket’s Lane Bolich at 113, Liberty Bell’s Bodie Paul at 160 and Okanogan’s Matt Zesiger at 182.

The Bulldogs’ Sterling Ritch, being the only wrestler at 220, moved up to 285 and took third.

Nanpuya wins 170 title

MARYSVILLE - Omak’s Navarro Nanpuya pinned all four of his opponents in winning the 170-pound championship at the Marysville Premier Tournament Jan. 12.

Kayden Cate tied for third at 106 points.

The Pioneers finished 15th out of 16 teams with 50 points (8-12 in matches).

“Marysville was a tough tournament for our young wrestlers,” Omak coach Dean Agee said. “Kayden Cate, freshman, had a good tournament. His only loss was to the eventual champion of the tournament.

“Navarro matched up with the defending state champion in the 3A division at 170 pounds. Navarro was leading 10-0 before he pinned in the championship. The team wrestled well, and the level of competition was a good way to prepare for the post season.”

Raiders finish second at Rainier

RAINIER - The Lake Roosevelt wrestling team finished second at the Sgt. Justin Norton Memorial Tournament on Jan. 12.

The Raiders’ champions David Crowe at 132, Kaleb Horn at 138 and Tony Nichols at 152 compiled 137.5 points to outdistance third-place Naches Valley at 97.5.

Forks took the title with a commanding 246 points.

Finishing fourth for Lake Roosevelt were Colton Jackson at 106 and Steven Flowers at 195.

Hilderbrant wins championship

COLBERT – Gunnar Hilderbrant on the combined Republic and Curlew wrestling team took first at 152 pounds at the Northwest Christian Crusader Classic tournament Jan. 12.

Hilderbrant received an opening bye before pinning three straight foes to reach the championship, where he took the title due to an injury default by Almira/Coulee-Hartline’s Wyatt Zielinski.

Zielinski, who also opened with a bye, reached the final match with two pins and a 3-2 decision in the semifinals.

Other Tigers included 3, Chad Doyen, 138; 5, David Phillips, 106; 6, Nolan Haddenham, 152; 7, JJ Walker, 145.

“Our boys went to Northwest Christian and competed against 267 wrestlers from some much larger schools,” said Republic/Curlew coach Noah Theckston. “All six of those whom we were able to take placed in the top 8 with two medalists.”

Republic/Curlew finished 10th with 76 points in the 27-team tournament.

Colville took first with 174.5 points.

ACH, which also got a fourth by Will Hahn at 285 pounds, was 15th with 41.5 points.

Oroville, which was 13th with 58.5 points, was led by Darian Range in third at 145.

Other Hornets included 4, Colby Guzman, 170; 5, Bri Ocampo, 152; 7, Sam Castrejon, 138; plus Elijah Burnell at 160, Oscar Cervantes at 182, Cody Field at 126, Kolo Moser at 126 and Jett McCoy at 152.

Inchelium, which finished 24th, included Spencer Ferguson taking sixth at 120.

Fox takes gold

COLBERT – Oroville’s Taralynn Fox took the gold medal at 125 pounds at the Northwest Christian invitational Jan. 12.

Fox improved to 11-0 with an overtime win in the championship match, said Hornet coach Chuck Ricevuto.

“Taralynn came through with a very aggressive take down,” Ricevuto said of the win over a tough top-10 1A opponent.

Also competing was Melinda Clark at 135, who had a pin in the tournament.

Republic’s Jager nabs eighth

OTHELLO – Republic’s Joshua Lynn Jager (20-8) finished eighth at the Othello Lady Huskies Invite on Jan. 12.

Jager, who competed at 110 pounds, opened with a pin of Cora Diehl and took a major decision (11-2) before falling in the quarterfinals by an 11-5 decision.

In the consolation bracket, Jager picked up two pins before being pinned in the match for seventh- and eighth-place.

Also for the Tigers was Leigha Russel (120), who went 2-2.

Both wrestlers are eighth-graders for Republic, which finished 51st as a team with 11 points out of 55 teams.

Tonasket’s Cailee Denison (105) and Missy Martinez (110) each went 3-2.

“Our girls had an awesome weekend of wrestling in the Othello tournament,” said Tonasket coach Cole Denison, whose team finished 43rd with 22 points. “This was a very tough tournament. It is really good to see our girls wrestle well with this level of competition.”

Jamie Wilson (140) went 1-2.

Also competing were Diehl, Athena Rietveld (135) and Yamilet Nunez (125).

Dick finishes third

NAPAVINE – Ida Sue Dick of Lake Roosevelt finished third at 140 pounds at the Napavine Tiger Classic tournament on Jan. 12.

Dick opened with a bye and a pin before falling by pin in the semifinals.

She rebounded with a pin in the consolation semifinals before finishing third with an injury default.

Tonasket 53, Chelan 5

CHELAN – The Tonasket High School wrestling team won every competed match for a 53-5 non-league victory over Chelan on Jan. 9.

The Goats points came from a forfeit at 152 pounds.

“Chelan has a very respectable program with some tough wrestlers and good coaching,” said coach Cole Denison on Facebook. “Last night our boys came prepared to battle and all wrestled really well.”

The match started at 120 pounds where Waylon Wilson took a technical fall, 15-0, over Jair Garundo.
