Wrestling: Tonasket wins mix-and-match

TONASKET – Tonasket won, 24-6, in an abbreviated mix-and-match against Okanogan and Omak wrestlers Jan. 24.

The big matchup of the night was at 195 pounds between the Tigers’ Isaac Gomez and the Bulldogs’ Dalton Swayze.

Gomez is ranked No. 1 in the B’s (1B/2B) at 182 pounds after winning the title in 2017, taking third last year and fourth in 2016.

Swayze is ranked No. 1 in 1A at 195 after placing fourth at state last year, which was the highest placement of any wrestler returning at the weight.

Gomez pulled out a 5-2 decision.

“It was another great match-up of two very talented wrestlers,” Okanogan coach Andy Knutson said.

The girls from Tonasket and Okanogan took on Quincy on Jan. 25.

“Almost all the girls got matches,” Knutson said.

“We are now in post-season and excited to see how many can move onto the regional tournament,” Knutson said.

The 1A Caribou Trail League teams compete in the District 6 tournament Feb. 2 at Cashmere.

Girls compete at a sub-regional tournament Feb. 1-2 at Eastmont High School.

Hornets honor seniors

OROVILLE – Oroville combined with Liberty Bell and Wilbur-Creston-Keller to take on the No. 2-ranked Lake Roosevelt team on Jan. 24.

“The No. 2-ranked team in state proved a bit too much by pulling off a 38-30 victory,” Oroville coach Chuck Ricevuto said. “After the dual we wrestled a bunch of exhibition bouts so everyone could get at least one match.”

Seniors included:

-Hunter Devon at 160 taking a pin and decision.

-Elijah Burnell at 170 getting a pin.

-Bri Ocampo at 160 could not wrestle because of an injury.

-Jose Cervantes at 285 “fought hard” but lost by fall, said Ricevuto.

“Wins by way of pin were also collected by Kolo Moser (9), Sam Castrejon (9) and Darian Range (11),” said Ricevuto.

On the girls’ side, junior Taralynn Fox continued her undefeated season (16-0) with a victory.

Other Oroville wrestlers on the night include Cody Field (10) at 126, Jett McCoy at 152, Oscar Cervantes (9) at 182 and Melinda Clark (10) at 130.
