ELECTRIC CITY — Oroville took top honors at the Central Washington 2B league golf championship tournament, May 8, at the Banks Lake Golf Course just outside of Electric City.
The tournament saw 16 boys and 5 girls competing for a slot in the district tournament – this most recent Monday, May 15 – and eventually the state competition in Tumwater.
Leading the way for Oroville were Will Moreau, who nabbed first overall with a 78 on the day, and Kane Booker, who took third with an 88.
The lone girl’s golfer from Oroville, Amelia Moreau, also held her own for the Hornet by tying for first with Okanogan’s lone girl’s golfer, Sophie Marchand. Both girls shot a 119.
The solid shooting on the boys side would give Oroville the first place overall with a 412.
Results for the 2B district tournament, and the competition itself, occurred after press time for the Chronicle but will be included in next week’s paper. The top six boys and five girls from districts will qualify for the May 23-24 state competition in Tumwater at the Tumwater Valley Golf Club.
Both Omak and Okanogan have also played their final regular season golf matches, May 8 and 11, respectively.
Omak’s last meet was a travel match to and against Cascade. The Omak boys would come out on top, 351-421, and the girls would follow suit, winning 410-506.
“The boys and girls played very well,” Omak coach Nick Popelier said.
Blake Sam shot a season low 72, just one over par for the course, and would take the best overall spot because of it. Halle Richter would also shoot a season best, 85, and also take the top overall for girls.
“Our kids are playing great golf at the right time of the year,” Popelier said. “Next Tuesday is our 1A district championship and state qualifier at our home course, come support our kids if you get the chance.”
For Okanogan, the final regular season match would be at home at the Okanogan Valley Golf Club, May 11, against Waterville and Oroville.
“It was a beautiful day and we celebrated with a barbecue afterwards,” Okanogan coach, Ron Cate, said.
Low score of the day went to Tucker Acord, Oroville, who shot 106. Ryder Freel, Okanogan, came in behind with a 111.
Hayden Chilmonik and Zander Freel, both Okanogan, tied things up with a 119 and 130, respectively. The remaining Bulldogs golfers played nine holes only.
Trey Hopkins shot 48, Tyler Johnson a 53, and Wyatt Harmon just behind with a 54.
Sophie Marchand, the lone girls golfer for Okanogan, shot a 57 on the nine hole course.
